Types of Adobe Photoshop Masking

Designers always get confused with all the different types of Adobe Photoshop masking. All the masking provided in Photoshop with their different use and with different working natures. There are mainly four types of masking in Photoshop which help us to make collages, effects, and mix images. Detailed clear learning and understanding of masking are a must for every student learning Photoshop.

Masking means mixing

With the help of Brushes, Vector shapes, Gradients, and Selection.

Works in White and Black color.

White means LIGHT. LIGHT is to show everything.

Black means DARK. DARKNESS hides everything.

Editable

We use various types of masking to make our work editable. Designers can edit their work at any point in time without losing any image data. Masking does not delete any data, It just shows or hides data. Later the data which you had hidden can be shown at any time which makes our work editable.

Clipping Mask

With the help of a clipping mask, you can insert your above layer inside the layer which is below it.

It works on all types of layers like shape layer, raster layer or type layer, etc.

On Both layers, you can work individually to make things editable.

Shortcut: CTR + ALT + G

Vector Mask

Work on any kind of layer to show or hide your layer with the help of Path and shapes which works on Vector masks.

You can find the vector masks in the Layer menu.

By pressing reveal it applies to that particular layer with showing all data in the layer. (White color)

By pressing hide all it applies to that particular layer by hiding all data in the layer. (Black color)

Layer Mask

Works on all kinds of layers. But if the mask is of raster-type nature, Paths will not work in this raster layer effects. You can insert black and white colors through Brushes and Gradients on Layer Mask.

With the help of a layer mask, you can Mix Images and make collages for different posters, and CD covers and can also make Digital matt paintings.

Quick Mask

By pressing Q you enter Quick mask mode where with the help of a brush you color your canvas with a Black brush after pressing Q again you will come out with the quick mask mode to layer mode and where you had run your brush it will convert into selections.

Working on selections and Appling filters to our selection can easily be done with the help of quick mask mode. Changing shapes of selections, with various effects making borders and frames. Increasing or decreasing selection can be done with the help of Quick mask mode.
